The Harriers’ travelled to Nottingham on Saturday, where they finished sixth in round 2 of the Athletics Direct Midland League Division 2. The day was notable for a number of good performances, not least being mother and daughter Ruth and Mel Bird both winning their respective discus events. Ruth won the B string with 25.27m and Mel won the A string with 32.54m. They both had a busy afternoon, with Mel achieving PB’s of 9.68m in the A shot (3rd place) and 28.09 in the B hammer (2nd place), whilst Ruth contested every field event (7 out of 8) apart from the high jump, all with varying degrees of success. A second place in the B pole vault with a PB equalling 1.90m, was followed by a 1st in the B shot (8.14m), 3rd in the A javelin (22.43m), and good points scored in the hammer, long jump and triple jump. She was supported in the javelin by Linsey Hutchins who won the B string with 21.59m, a season’s best, and by Megan Mogweetsi who took 3rd in the A triple jump.

On the track for the women, Sam Griffiths ran a PB of 25.6 in finishing 3rd in the A 200m and also finished 3rd in the A 100m in 12.4. Frankie Courtney ran a season’s best 67.6 for 2nd in the A 400m hurdles, which event also saw team manager Jane Horder win the B string in 72.6. Jess Robins placed 2nd in her senior league debut at 100m hurdles, and Rachel See finished 3rd in the A 3,000m. For the men, the 400m saw Chris Bell-Hartley run a PB of 50.0, to finish 3rd in the A race, his fourth successive PB of the season, and was supported by Joe Akers who won the B 400m race in 52.1. Jeremy Drackett was 3rd in the A 100m in a time of 11.2, whilst the men’s 4×100 relay team finished 2nd in 45.9.The field events saw Beck Phillips placing 2nd in the discus with a personal best distance of 36.06m.
