The new outdoor track and field season started for a number of Cheltenham Harriers’ young athletes at the Kidderminster & Stourport Spring Warm-up Meeting. In sunny but windy conditions, the javelin throwers were in good form, with Ryan Ellis (u20 men) winning his event with a throw of 45.79m, ably supported by Joseph Hardman with a PB of 42.26m. Not to be out done, George Elliott won the u17 men’s event with a PB of 43.34m, and for the u15 boys, Christopher Picken threw a PB of 28.46m. Other field event hi-lights included a 1st place for Sophie Brown (u15 girls) in the long jump with a distance of 4.63m, supported by other u15 girls Lucy Griffin (4.06m), Lucy Meech (a PB of 3.83m) and Grace Pitman (3.70m). Lucy Griffin appeared again in the 3K shot putt, recording a PB 0f 7.55m, followed by Helena Shannon with a PB of 6.58m, and Neve Berry’s 6.25m. Max Godden produced a PB of 4.20m in the u13 long jump, and he was followed by Ben Ayres with 3.39m, and Chayse Hamilton with a PB of 3.32m. The u11 boy’s long jump, Barnabas Shaw leapt 3.60m, and George Hemus leapt 2.94m.
Turning to the track events, for the u20 womens’ events, Steph Beardsmore placed 2nd in the 80m with a time of 10.5 seconds, and 2nd in the 150m in 20.4. Also doubling up at the short sprints at u15 girls was Grace Pitman who ran PB’s of 11.0 for 80m and 20.7 for 150m. Again at u15 level, Helena Shannon ran an 80m PB of 11.2, with Madeline Jones a PB of 12.2, whilst the 150m sprint saw Lucy Griffin run a PB of 21.2. In the u13 girls’ sprints, Molly-Mae Alsop ran a 13.3 PB for 80m, Cerys Burgess ran PB’s of 13.6 for 80m and 26.1 for 150m, Maddie Carnes ran a PB of 12.6 for 80m, and Hope Heward-Mills was timed at 23.0 for the 150m. The u11 girls featured Una Lua running a time of 13.0 for 80m, with Juliet Shannon timed at 13.6 in the same event. For the boys’ sprints, Matthew Dwerryhouse, in the u17 age group, ran a PB of 21.4 for 150m, Christopher Picken was timed at a PB of 23.5 for the u15 boys 150m, and Ben Ayres ran 24.3 for the same event at u13 level. Ayres also ran the 80m at 12.6, with Max Godden timed at 12.5, whilst in the u11 age group, George Hemus ran the 80m in 13.5. At the 300m event, u15 Christopher Picken achieved his 3rd PB of the day by running a time of 51.2. He was joined at this distance by u15 girls Francesca Bevan with a PB time of 50.4, and Lucy Meech, whose 51.8 time was her first outing at this event.
Moving to the boys’ 600m races, Matthew Dwerryhouse ran his second PB of the day with a time of 1:42.9, with u13 Chayse Hamilton timed at 2:14.2, and u11s George Hemus on 2:14.2 closely followed by Joe Stocks at 2:14.9. For the girls 600m, u15 Francesca Bevan ran her second PB of the day, with a 1:59.0 time, followed by Sophie Owen at 2:06.6. In the u13 age group, five Harriers’ girls competed, with Emily Dandy leading the way with a PB time of 1:58.8, followed by Isabelle Owen’s PB of 2:01.3, Hope Heward-Mills at 2:13.6, Olivia Bennett’s PB of 2:15.7, and Maddie Carnes at 2:37.0. In the u11 girls 600m, Olivia Gardiner’s time of 2:11.2 was also a PB. Finally in the 1200m races, our sole representative, who had already run the 600m, was u13 Olivia Bennett who, with a time of 5:01.8 and also achieved her second PB of the day.
