English Schools Octathlon Champs

In one of the best results for many years Gloucestershire’s inter boys’ squad enjoyed a superb finale to the season by finishing among the medals at the English Schools’ Combined Events Championships. Brothers Jamie and Rob Worman, Daniel Carpenter and Alex Eaglestone, who are all members of Cheltenham & County Harriers, won the bronze medals behind Nottinghamshire and Kent in the octathlon event held over two days at the Exeter Arena, in Devon.

“I think that is one of the best results Gloucestershire have had for some time,” said Kerry Eddie, who coaches all four athletes. “The event comes at the end of a long season which for the athletes started back in April so it is difficult for them to get too many personal bests and stay consistent. But overall they did really well and three of the four (the Worman brothers and Eaglestone) achieved personal best scores overall. All you can ask for is consistency, the odd personal best and no disasters!”

The quartet certainly achieved that with 16-year-old Jamie leading the way to finish ninth with a score of 4,715 points which included one individual PB in the 400m. “Jamie was slightly disappointed as he was hoping to finish in the top four and win an England vest,” added Eddie. “But it was still a fine achievement and in most of his other events, apart from the high jump, he was just below his personal bests.” Carpenter and Rob Worman both made the top 20 in 18th and 19th respectively while Eaglestone was 31st.
