South West Schools Combined Events

Cheltenham Harriers athletes enjoyed success as they represented Gloucestershire in the South West Schools Combined Events Championships in Exeter .The intermediate boys’ team consisting of Dan Carpenter, Alex Eaglestone and Jamie Worman won the team octathlon competition with a total of 12,631 points, beating Somerset by a margin of 235 points. There were a number of individual personal bests for the boys throughout the weekend, including six out of eight events for Dan. With the result hanging in the balance before the start of the 1500m the boys knew that they had to stay ahead of Somerset in the last event and showed grit and determination in securing their victory in an exciting finish. The team success was reflected at an individual level with Jamie ending the day in 4th position, Dan in 5th and Alex in 9th in his first-ever octathlon. All three athletes are coached by Kerry Eddie-Jury and have qualified for the English schools Combined Events Championships to be held in Exeter in the middle of September.
