Telford 10k, 16/12/12

John Parker set a new personal best with an impressive performance at the Telford 10k road race. Less than one month before he turns forty, Parker showed that he is still improving and will be very competitive when he joins the veteran ranks in the new year. In the early stages of the race the Dave Newport coached athlete started steadily and trailed teammate Rhys Park until the 4km mark, before reaching the halfway point in 15:30. Despite slowing in the second half of the race Parker knocked fourteen seconds off his 2010 personal best time to cross the line in 31:41 for 27th place in a high quality field that saw 2012 Olympians Andy Baddeley (29:08)and Nick McCormick (29:21) finish first and second. Parker’s time also moved him up to third in the Gloucestershire 10k rankings for the year behind Tipton’s Josh Lilley (29:32) and fellow Cheltenham runner Dave Roper (30:25). Eighteen year old Park who had beaten Parker in the previous weekend’s Gloucestershire Cross Country League continued his comeback from injury with 32:06 in 34th place whilst Will New completed the course in 35:00.
