Rhys Park claimed an excellent individual silver medal in the under 20 men’s race as the Cheltenham Harriers team took bronze medals at the Midland Cross Country Championships in Stafford. After the previous day’s heavy snow had left underfoot conditions poor, the organisers decided to shorten the course which did not suit Park who relies on his endurance. With the pace in the early stages of the race relatively slow, the eighteen year old moved into the lead and gradually upped the pace in an attempt to whittle down the leading pack. With about a kilometre to go the Dave Newport coached athlete had opened up a 10 metre gap over Stroud’s junior GB international Will Paulson and Doug Mussen of Notts. However, 1500m runner Paulson finished strongly to overtake Park and claim the title in 22:11, with the Cheltenham athlete six seconds back and four seconds ahead of Birchfield’s Rory Grant who took third. In the same race Dan Owen also impressed as he moved through the field to finish in a pleasing eighth place in 23:20 whilst Chris Perrett came home in 22nd place to help the team secure the bronze medals. Rachel See ran well to finish in 22nd place in the under 17 girl’s race, Beth Wynn came 20th in the under 20 women’s event and Elliot Prince finished 88th in the men’s race.
