Andy Smitherman marked his Cheltenham debut with a 400m victory and personal best as the Harriers finished fifth in their opening Midland League Division One fixture of the season at Wolverhampton. The 22 year old Gloucestershire University student had lined up for the 400m A race hoping to break 50 seconds for the first time, but smashed through the barrier as he pulled clear of the field in the final 100m to lower his pb by 0.7 seconds and register a 49.4 clocking. He then followed this up with third place in the 100m A race in 11.5 seconds.
The 2000m steeplechase saw the Harriers gain maximum points with Dan Owen cruising to victory in 6:26.2 and Jon Barnes finishing second to claim the B string win in 6:48.2. Twenty-five minutes earlier Owen had placed second in the 800m A race in 1:58.2. Further 800m success came in the B race where Andrew van Kints took the win in 1:59.2. The club’s sole field event win came in the women’s high jump where Mollie Courtney cleared 1.60m whilst Ashley Barker came second in the men’s competition with 1.95m and Bill Burley placed second in the long jump with 5.98m. Emily Pascoe took second in the women’s 100m hurdles A race with a 15.2 clocking and Russell Whiting claimed third in the men’s 110m hurdles in 19.3 seconds. There were personal best performances from Jo Wilkie with 11:18.9 in the 3000m and 5:17.9 in the 1500m and for Harriet Sawle who lowered her 400m best to 62.9 seconds.
