A superb run from Helena Shannon secured 3rd place for the Harriers in the Club Connect relays in the U13 girl’s 4×200m relay at the Birmingham indoor Grand Prix. After strong runs from Megan Ashmore, Emily Spencer and Ella Morgan she took the baton in 5th place she stormed round the banked track at the Barclaycard Arena to overtake the Birchfield Harriers’ final leg runner in the last few metres to stop the clock at 2min 08secs. The race was won by a very good quartet from Halesowen A.C. Despite a fall by Ruby Phelps at a melee at the final change over the under 17 girls’ team finished strongly after a blistering final leg from Freya Chapman just narrowly failing to catch the Rugby & Northampton athlete in front of her. The club were also represented by teams in the under 15 groups where Ben Watts (U13) ran to help complete our line-up after illness at the last minute forced the withdrawal of one of our runners. What is more remarkable is that he had already run the under 13 boys race 5 minutes before and then had to run around the arena to get into position for the next race! The team were then able to take front row seats to watch the elite athletes take to the track. An amazing day was complete as the team watched a majestic Mo Farah run 8 minutes 3.40 seconds to break Kenenisa Bekele’s indoor world record for 2 miles.
