There were bronze medals for Cheltenham Harriers Dan Owen and Luke Carroll at the England under 20 Championships in Bedford. On Saturday eighteen year old Owen won his first national medal in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:39.25. Whilst pleased to claim a medal, the Andy Beadle coached athlete looked set for silver before falling heavily at the water jump on the penultimate lap and getting caught a lap later as he missed out on silver by just one second. In Sunday’s 1500m final Owen’s training partner Luke Carroll was looking to add another national title to his collection. A relatively slow pace saw a large lead group pass through 800m in 2:09 and reach the bell in 2:57. In a frantic last lap the top three eventually pulled clear, but Carroll was forced to settle for bronze in 3:52.94 behind winner Robbie Fornham Rose of Tonbridge (3:52.68) and Hillingdon’s Matthew Fayers (3:52.88). In the javelin Liam Downer threw a season’s best of 57.65m for eighth place whilst in the under 23 championship Richard Tremblen ran a time of 22.32 seconds in his 200m heat. Full Results.
