At the England Athletics under 20 indoor pentathlon championship in Sheffield Mollie Courtney began the new year in fine style taking the Midlands Counties bronze medal and finishing seventh overall in the national event. In her first competition in the under 20 age-group the Dave Warner coached athlete opened with fourth place in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.94 seconds, setting a personal best and new Harriers club records for both seniors and under 20s. After two failures at 1.69m in the high jump, Courtney looked as if she would have to settle for just a new indoor PB but she stuck at the task and cleared at the third attempt. With new confidence she went on to jump 1.72m at the first attempt, beating her outdoor PB from last summer. A 7.37m PB in the shot followed before a 5.01m long jump surpassed her previous Harriers record. A final personal best of 2:40.46 in the 800m gave Courtney a total points score of 3290 which smashed the previous Harriers records for both the under 20 and senior women’s indoor pentathlon.
