Julia Cooke continued her fine recent form with sixth place in the 1500m at the British Universities Indoor Championship in Sheffield. The Birmingham University student won her heat in a time in 4:36.95 before clocking 4:31.13 in the final. Sprinter Samantha Griffiths (Gloucestershire) had a fine championship setting personal bests of 8.00 seconds in the 60m and 26.39 in the 200m to qualify for the semi-finals of both events where she ran 8.05 and 26.63 respectively. In the men’s 200m Richard Tremblen (Cardiff Metropolitan) won his heat in 22.42 before running a time of 22.14 in his semi-final. Frankie Courtney (Swansea) finished eighth in the high jump with 1.55m after clocking 9.79 in the 60m hurdle heats whilst Helen Hanstock (Bangor) set a season’s best of 9.61m in shot put qualifying competition.
