Cheltenham Harriers put in another excellent team performance with nine runners in the top thirteen to win their ninth consecutive White Horse 5k road race in Gloucester. Harriers Dave Roper and Anthony Bailey were in a lead group of four that included Oli Mott (Bristol) and James Rodgers (North Somerset). Roper and Mott pulled clear at two miles, with the Cheltenham runner forcing the pace to try and drop his training partner before the final run in. However, Mott had an extra gear in the final straight to open up a three second gap and claim the Gloucestershire Championship in 15:00. Finishing fourth, three seconds behind Rodgers, Bailey produced a fine performance to knock nine seconds off his personal best to take the veteran title in 15:26. Jon Barnes broke the sixteen minute barrier for the first time with an impressive 15:52 PB in seventh, whilst Marc Fallows ran well to finish eighth overall and as second veteran home in 15:58. Dave Aubrey continued his remarkable summer of improvement with a 16:02 PB in ninth before Ben Price completed the victorious six man team in 16:07 for tenth place.
A close battle saw Harriers fill the next three places with Will New (16:22) staying clear of Roger Mullins (16:24) and James Bingham (16:25) who were both pleased with their performances. Mike Gray continued his return to form with a 16:53 PB before another close Harriers battle saw Dave Rantell (17:19) edge out Steve Hall (17:20) and Miguel Mundinano (17:21). Hall was rewarded with a PB whilst Rantell and Mundinano took second and third in the vet 45 age group. Having never broken eighteen minutes before Gareth Edwards smashed the barrier with a 17:42 PB and Ian Giles clocked 18:21. Youngsters Jack Mundinano and Jess White finished as first under 17 boy and second under 17 girl in 19:19 and 20:24 respectively to complete the Harriers contingent.
Representing Gloucestershire at the Inter-Counties Championship in Bedford Dan Owen claimed the bronze medal in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:15.19 whilst Alex Bampton clocked 16:23.9 for twelfth place in the 5000m at the BMC regional meeting in Coventry.
